The HPV vaccine is a safe and effective way to protect against the types of HPV that most commonly cause disease. It works by triggering the body's immune response to fight the virus if exposed in the future. The vaccine is most effective when given before any exposure to the virus, which is why it is recommended for children and young adolescents, typically between the ages of 9 and 14. However, older teens and young adults up to the age of 26 can also benefit from vaccination.
